Cech Modifies Mask

Following a third freak accident in as many weeks, resulting in further injuries and stitches to his face, Chelsea stopper Peter Cech has devised a new version of his protective helmet. Cech will wear a new full face mask in the forthcoming fixture at Newcastle.

“I do not think it will affect my performance,” said Cech, though it was hard to hear him because of the thick leather strappings across his mouth.

Cech anticipates that “there may be one or two issues with peripheral vision”, as, to ensure full protection, his eyes are completely covered. “I am asking my coach to stand by the post and shout when the ball comes towards me. I think it should be OK.”

Still modelling his latest design, Cech then got into his car, sped off and drove into a pond.
