End Of An Era As U’s Dog Kicks KennelPosted: May 7, 2008
The last surviving ‘squad dog’, namely Young Alf, Cambridge United’s German Shepherd, has died aged 32.
The squad dog concept became popular in the early 1970’s, following the example of Blue Peter, which had then popularised the usage of the adopted dog.
Young Alf, who remained alive for so long due to pioneering work by the city’s university students, had lived in a state of advanced paralysis in the home dugout at the Abbey Stadium since 1985.
Plans to shave him, stuff him and add wheels are in the balance due to a lack of funding.
